Andre has been trying very, very hard to find a book he can read. None of these make any sense to him! If they've been receiving people from all over, there should be some books he can read, right? Something to explain this better... Should he ask where the foreign books are?
... even just flipping through the books and looking at illustrations like a child, he can't make much meaning out of the sights depicted. It's like he's been transported to some world of legends, or he's having a very long, very strange dream.

If everything else is far beyond anything he'd experienced before, unless this was a terribly cruel dream, dangling vain hopes before him, he might be able to save the vision in his remaining eye. That way, he can still fight, he can keep his word and stay always by Oscar's side to keep her safe, he can better fulfill his purpose.
